Biodiversity Net Gain for Planning Applications
What is Biodiversity Net Gain?
The Environment Act 2021, introduced the requirement that all development (excluding a limited list of exemptions) must show Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). This is to ensure that habitats for nature and wildlife are improved once development is completed.
Accordingly, the planning departments of local councils now require the biodiversity on new proposed developments to be increased by 10-20% from the value calculated before development.
All applicable planning applications must demonstrate that the proposed development can deliver at least 10% BNG. This is either delivered on site, on other land in control of the developer, or through purchasing Biodiversity Credits.
Our ecological consultant will carry out a calculation of existing BNG, and produce a report, including details of the proposals to boost biodiversity and secure the additional 10%, through one of the options outlined above. These documents form an essential part of the suite of documents submitted to the Planning Authority as part of a planning application.
